MySpace

MySpace tagline: “a place for friends”

When you register at MySpace, you’d be asked to verify your account by inputting the letters seen on the image to avoid spamming. It’s good. Not all social networking sites have this feature.

You will be asked to choose your URL.

And you’ll be asked to input your real name, but this remains private, and doesn’t appear in your public profile. The real name can be used by your friends when searching for your account in MySpace.

Features of MySpace

  • Film
  • Blog
  • Groups
  • Events
  • MySpace TV

Facebook Tagline: “Facebook is a social utility that connects you with the people around you.”

Facebook is more serious than MySpace. You have to register using your real name. There’s no slot for nickname. I wonder if all users would input their real names. I’ve seen some people (in facebook) who are using their nicknames for first name and then other’s surnames for the last name.

There’s a minifeed where you can see updates about your friends. Features include photos, groups, network, events, marketplace, and various of applications that have started to clutter the site.

    Orkut

    Orkut: Connect, discover, share.

Orkut is owned by Google so expect that you’d sign in using your Gmail account.

    Features:

Scrapbook – where you can paste in photos, videos, audio, and flash widgets in scraps to your friends.
Friends – where you can categorize friends based on five levels:
    • best friends
    • good friends
    • friends
    • acquaintances
    • haven’t met
Communities – where you can search existing communities or create your own

Orkut has “today’s fortune” (e.g.) Today’s fortune: You are sociable and entertaining. This is cool. It somehow affirms the user when no one seems available to tell him/her these words at the moment.
