When my youngest brother was barely four, he told our eldest sister and me these words that were imprinted in my memory. He was speaking in our local dialect so I’d put here the translation in English. “Please speak Aenglish.” The additional A in the word “english” was intentional because it was how the way my little brother spoke the word. But I am not dealing with that. I would like to give emphasis on why he was so optimistic and enthusiastic to learn about speaking in English at an early age. His accent then at an early age until elementary, Grade 5 or 6, was very like a native speaker. I wonder where he got that accent, and he spoke the correct grammar and pronunciation. However, when he transferred to another school, it’s as if his English speaking skill has waned. I continuously encourage him to bring back his enthusiasm for learning how to speak English like a native speaker.

  1. A very interesting story! The best way to learn to speak a new language is to learn as a kid does. Unfortunately, the older we grew, the more we lost the spontaneity. But we at least should give it a try.
